Here are the questions we answered today in the computer lab. If you don't think you will be able finish your answers during class tomorrow, please work on the answers tonight.
1. Summarize the action that has taken place in the story. Do not include your opinion!!
2. What is the theme of the story, and what evidence leads you to believe this is the theme? 3. How is this novel similar to Freak the Mighty? Use evidence to support your answer.
4. How are characters changing as they respond to the events in the plot? Discuss their character traits and use evidence to support these traits.

Today the students received a copy of their language arts midterm exam. This test will be administered on October 1st and 2nd. The exam uses a menu format, so the students have some choice about what questions they answer. They have the opportunity to prepare their answers and practice writing the essays until the day of their midterm. I want thoughtful responses to the questions, so I am allowing the students to make notes on a 3x5 index card to use the day of the test. Just looking for the information to put on the index card helps the students study and remember what they have learned. I am looking forward to excellent responses that show mastery of multiple language arts standards! Happy studying!

The students took the Universal Screener for language arts today in the computer lab with the counselors, so I did not teach them. Tomorrow I will provide more guidance on the weekly homework assignments. I know they have been challenging, so I will help all of the students in class so that they can be successful on these assignments in the future.

Signpost Quiz Tomorrow! Students must know the 6 signposts, know what they are, and know the key questions you ask at each signpost. They also must be able to read a passage and pick out and explain a signpost they find in the reading. Happy studying!

It has been a great week in 6th grade language arts! We are really getting into the action of Freak the Mighty, and the students are working hard to find signposts. We will continue to work on reading logs in class next week. Students will not be responsible for completing the log at home. They will, however, need to complete their weekly homework handout with care. Some of their scores this week were not so hot, so I am looking forward to more thorough responses and correct answers next Friday. Students also learned what their Lexile level is. Lexile level is essentially their reading level as determined by a one-shot reading test. The results in no way give me a comprehensive idea of their reading abilities, but they give me a jumping off point. Please encourage your child to read for pleasure to improve reading stamina. For more information, visit www.lexile.com.

Yay! We survived the first week of school. We are off to a great start learning new reading comprehension strategies! The homework for the weekend is to create a visual representation of the Notice and Note Signposts. The parameters for this assignment were give to the students in class today. Please do not spend all weekend creating this study tool! Use materials from home to create a visually appealing way to remember the signposts. If you are struggling to remember the signposts, go to the Important Links section of my Weebly for links to Notice and Note Youtube videos. Thanks for a great week, students!
