Notice and Note Signpost Help- 9/25/15
I have found that many students are struggling to fully answer the signpost questions on the reading log. To help remedy this problem, I have created a fill-in-the-blank template for signpost responses. Hopefully this will help parents help their children at home when they are struggling with their reading logs.
Reading Requirements Update- 8/25/15
Now that we have thoroughly practiced logging signposts in class, students will begin logging signposts from their independent reading books this week. These logs will be due after two weeks of reading. During the first nine weeks this will include 160 pages of independent reading per log. I have already talked to the students, and they know that this requires merely reading 12 pages per night to meet my expectation. Along with the reading, the students will reflect on the key questions for 8 signposts they locate in the 160 pages. The do NOT have to log every signpost they see, just the eight best ones. They will also further explore one of their signposts on the back of the log by writing at least a well-written paragraph reflection on the deeper meaning of that part of the story.
Independent Reading Requirements
1st nine weeks-- 80 pages per week 2nd nine weeks-- 100 pages per week 3rd nine weeks-- 120 pages per week 4th nine weeks-- 140 pages per week Though we are on the semester system, I feel that it is vital to improve reading stamina, so the number of pages per week will increase at the 9-week mark. These required pages will be documented using a reading log. The students will get more information about this soon.
